Course aimed at: Suitable for children with social skills challenges including those with global delays and special educational needs. Age range 6-14. Grouped by age. Starting Saturday August 12, 2017.

Course details: The course will run through a series of topics 12-15 covering key areas such as conversation skills, cooperative play, making and maintaining friendships, self-regulation, empathy as well as conflict resolution. At the end of the topic rotations we will sit down with each parent (and child if appropriate) and go through observations and next steps so that the next rotation of topics can be focused towards the whole group’s evolving sense of competence. Specific sessions will focus on special situations such as eating out, birthday parties.

Facilitators: The group would be facilitated by 2 child adult leaders – Angela (MA Education, MA Counselling) together with either Eileen Haskins (Qualified Montessori teacher) together with either LSC teacher and counsellor Catherine Muir. Each group will also include a child role model peer tutor – a child of a similar age who is socially aware and willing to act as a role model/ social support. The groups will be open to 4-5 participants only.

Parental involvement and feedback: Parents will be involved in the programme as much as they choose. The last 10 mins of each session (for the younger age group) are designed for feedback to the participants which will also benefit the parents. Specific parent sessions will be held every 10-12 weeks and after each 15 week rotation a report card for each child will be discussed with each parent (together with the child if appropriate).
